The most helpful tool on Facebook and Instagram comments is the Delete button. I used it today to rid my feed of a troll who crept in overnight and thought he’d weigh in - in helpful earnestness - on this oil sketch. It made me laugh, delete his comment, and block him, and then consider what a good newsletter topic it would be.
Oh what a wonderful post! What I love about your work is how your use of the brush, with lots of juicy color, describes not just the subject but imparts a sense of spontaneity and joy. Like many of the examples. Maybe someday that “painter” critic will see that too.
This post should be read by every student of art. It is so important to have a reason other than ‘copying’ to paint something. Unless you have some relationship with the object and want to convey a certain feeling it will come across as uninteresting. Your ambiguous, blended figures give them motion and interest that holds the viewer. Your’s are the paintings that make me stop and contemplate and fill in my own story. Truly interesting and beautiful!
Ingrid, you are one of the most thoughtful teachers I have ever known. You are fair, kind, and direct in your critiques; plus your talent gives you authority to provide that feedback. I learned a great deal from you and appreciate that you share your talent and wisdom with other artists. Keep doing your newsletters...they are always meaningful to me.
Lol...clearly this sadly naive and ignorant person has a different idea about "art". And apparently is not particularly self aware either!
Your work Ingrid is beautiful, intelligent and mesmerizing. I know you have more sensibility than to let this "unintentionally" humorous post cause you even a moment of self doubt!
I like your colorful painting and it does all you described—even the boredom with bowed heads and hands in pockets! Also like your very well done critique. I hope the rather egotistic but clueless critic is able to read this!!!
I really enjoyed this post, Ingrid. I love the way you handled the troll and turned it into a teaching moment. Your dry wit is so appreciated. Love your work and all the ways you share it.
Amazing how you rose above what could have been received as sexual harassment and turned it into a lesson for us. Thank you. Your paintings are beautiful and evocative in all of the best ways that art can be.
Couldn’t agree more with your first statement …”.the most helpful tool on Facebook and Instagram comments is the DELETE button.” BRAVO INGRID!!! Good for you to take that “Lemon” and then creating Lemonade…. as they say.
Good grief... It appears, he has never studied art or art history, and I question whether or not he has studied figure drawing or anatomy, but yet he has the hubris to critique your painting. 🤦🏼♀️ Your post was an art lesson for us all, thank you! I have admired your artwork since I saw the very first one. You are one of my favorite contemporary figure artists.
Art is subjective but the critics painting is amateurish and juvenile. I would not give it a second look if it were hanging in a gallery. Your painting is wonderful, Ingrid, and would draw me in with its light, movement, color and composition! Delete is a wonderful option and you made the right choice!
I love your paintings, Ingrid!
Thank you, Karen! I really appreciate that:)

Thanks, Candi🙏
Your work’s incredible!! Had to chuckle at this “critic”. In my opinion he’s clueless lol!!!
He made my day:)
What a great post, Ingrid! I hope you know your painting stands up with the best of them.
Thanks so much, Louise🙏

I have my doubts that he's one of my readers😄
Good point
Great post, Ingrid. You took what could have been a negative and turned it into such a thoughtful post. I really enjoyed reading it.
I'm glad you liked it, Linda! It was fun to research this one:)

Thanks, Paul! I enjoyed the troll this time because he was so clueless and benign. f only they were all like that.
In this time, when communication seems to be trending toward telling everyone else how they must think, it is a breath of fresh air to read this!
That’s a great compliment. I’m glad you felt that way about my newsletter 😊

He’s a piece of work, alright😁
I’m so glad that you enjoyed my post and my paintings, Lois.
Many thanks!
Love your loose sketch/ paintings. I find them encouraging. I know. Hard to explain, but seeing them lifts me somehow.
That's a great compliment, Sabine. Thank you!
