Here’s my new checklist of things to say to a picture framer when I leave a painting in the shop for framing. It’s a small list but it covers the main points: Don’t try to “improve” the artwork in any way. Do not spray the painting with water! Just frame it, please.

She is so beautiful. Great article. Restorers are great artists and have knowledge of do’s and don’t. I had a painting from my mother in law dated 1929 that I love. My father in law decided to varnish it with hardware store varnish. Over the years the painting was without colors. The restorer took all the varnish off cm by cm. Now the colors have regained their strength. Expensive but worthwhile.
Hi Ingrid: Wow, what an ordeal! I am curious what the painting was painted on -it kind of looks like burlap? Anyway, I hope you have a wonderful, love filled Christmas.
Thank you for this valuable information! I'm just so glad that your gorgeous painting was saved. What a heartbreaking thing to have happened, and to have gone through. So happy that it is back, hanging on your walls, and looking beautiful once again.
Such a beautiful painting 😍 I‘m glad it’s restored.
I also had a bad experience with a framer. He ruined three small paintings of mine with splattered paint. I should have listened to my gut and didn’t give him another chance - he made them worse while trying to restore them 🫣😓 Lesson learned: I need to learn how to frame myself.
Hi Ingrid! I watched your recent Winslow art chat and heard you speaking about this framing/painting debacle. I hadn't seen your blogpost about it. Thanks so much for sharing it.
I can ONLY imagine how devastating this would be!! I’m so glad it worked out in the end! Oy vey!!
Wow! What an ordeal! This post was very interesting though. Thank you for sharing! Beautiful painting...:)
