I can so relate to this: "I’ve stopped struggling with the subject and have started to enjoy the process and the paint. This doesn’t feel stale."
And, funny enough, I actually read "this doesn't feel safe!"
I am constantly trying to nudge, push, cajole myself into that "enjoying the process" part of painting. However, I do get stuck in this vortex of holding on to the tightness and hard edges, and self-imposed expectations of rendering accurately, or recognizably, or what have you. But I do feel like I'm making progress into the enjoying the process...
Omg does this resignate with me .. I started doing art for fun after years of doing nothing (did a degree in fine art) I turned a room in my house into practically an art shop .. I spend 90% of my time trying to figure out what it is I want to draw or paint etc.. I’ve taken classes that at least forces me to do something , but as I understand like anything you want to achieve you need to do it .. you can’t become a skier without skiing you can become a cook without cooking .. so yeah you need to pick up a pencil a paint brush and pick anything to draw or paint and put in the practice no perfection required accept what you make ,make the mistakes enjoy the process and try not to beat yourself up in the meanwhile lol it’s like someone’s going to judge you ..but it’s only you in the end
Ok so now I have to listen to my own words
thank you for yours ! It’s an inspiration ..love all your apples 🍎
Yuval is heading a class at Penn Studio…hmmm…you should reach out to them…do you teach only at WAC….Does Bato always wipe back multiple times on a canvas?
I've loved him for years😊 What a master of suggesting rather than explaining.
I'm really enjoying David Baird's work right now: low chroma, delicate, textured, and filled with innovative ideas about subject and composition. Along the same lines and possibly from the same school is Yuvalit Yosifov. She's ridiculously young and will go far.
Ingrid- once again thanks for another great resource…love the apples, the video, the sage wisdom, hmm those blossoms look familiar…enjoyed your Winslow class! Miss seeing new renditions of your mother each week LOL Hope you are well and staying warm!!! Love the mark making as always…
😊 I'm pleased to see you here, Paul! I miss our class. That one kept my brain very active which is probably why the studio felt a bit "meh" after it ended.
It's beyond freezing here!!! But Monday will bring respite and I can make it that long.
How are you? Have you been painting? I hope all is well where you are.
Winter has finally arrived here in New Mexico too! Yes! on the painting but never enough…have other things in my life too…bummer :( Really enjoyed this month’s message…maybe it’s part of the winter blues that makes it seem so “meh” getting underway in studio?! Glad we kept you on your toes…but you have some more coming up at Winslow to keep u busy. I am actually taking Patrick Lee’s class now…bet you would enjoy it! Been admiring some of Bob Kebic painting lately…also Christian Hook…you probably know them both…well I hope all your fond memories are not in the past and that you continue to create new ones. It is fun to see what you are up to.
I know Hook (met him, actually, at his gallery in London!) but didn't know Kebic's work. It's very interesting and thoughtful. It would take a lot of thinking to keep the colour scheming straight. You are eclectic!
Anyone and everyone on this thread take one of Ingrid’s classes …if you haven’t already. Take another one if you have! Fun, insightful and gives attendees 110%. Check her out on Winslow Art Center site.
What a great post. And I miss classes with you. Ended up having to postpone our trip to Feb, and not sure if that will pan out so basically going week but week. Take care and keep on transforming the subject matter to an uplifting piece of art. And if you ever sell demos please let us know
I'm so sorry to hear that the trip was postponed. What a time this is(:
I'm looking forward to getting back to teaching because my life is very hermit like. My online painting community keeps me connected and happy.
The demos that I do in workshops never look good out of the bright lights that I use during filming, but if anything ever catches your eye here or on Instagram or Facebook, send me a note!

I'm glad it resonated with you, Sam. It's something I have to relearn on a regular basis:)
Fantastico!
Thank you!

I'm glad that this was exercise held some ideas for your own practice, Tracey:) Thanks for reading my newsletter!
Good luck with your new WAC class tomorrow!
Thanks, Paul

I saw that. I do only teach at the Winslow. It's an amazing group of people and I'm so well treated. There's no reason for me to look elsewhere.
I don't believe he wipes back. Instead, I think he starts very thin and runny. If you search Youtube, you'll find a demo or two - in Russian😁
Figured! Hard to get one past you…will check out David and Yuvalit…thanks
I have been looking at Joaquin Trinxet Spanish contemporary of and I think a good match to Sorolla…love his color
Alright Ingrid…this weeks artist me to u- Bato Dugarzhapov …what u got in return?
I've loved him for years😊 What a master of suggesting rather than explaining.

Love unique mark making!….
I think it is so cool that you of all artists met Hook! If Canadians qualify for Portrait Artist Of The Year…you should apply to that show!!!

Thanks for this, Paul🙏
I needed this right now. Love your apples so much!
I'm so pleased that this was a timely post for you, Joyce. I love it when synchronicity happens.

Love this post and your thoughts. I'm resisting the impulse to gush but I am enthralled by your work.
😊 Thanks so much, Norman. Gushing is always welcome!
Thank you! Thank you!! I spend more time agonzing on what to paint than painting! And..not even the artist you are! You made my day!
I'm so pleased that this gave you a direction to explore!
