I’ll be teaching two online workshops beginning in October, after I return from teaching in Italy. (And after I get over my usual jet lag:)
The Painted History: A Fresh Look at
the Family Album
Saturdays,
October 15 - November 5, 2022
Online at The Winslow Art Center
I’ve taught this one before and am doing it again because I absolutely love it. The work that’s produced by students in this workshop is always original, personal, and memorable.
In The Painted History we mine our photo albums for inspiration to create works that speak to us in our modern lives.
Working from both colour and black and white images, we focus on simplifying and composing single and multiple figures to get to the essence of the picture. Our goal is to convey both the subjects and the emotions that they holds for us. We also aim to make compelling paintings that can stand on their own, even if the viewer doesn’t know the subject or back story.
Colour schemes. paint application, and brushwork are major components of the course.
If figurative work speaks to you, I hope you’ll join me!
Make it Glow
Tuesdays,
October 18 - November 8
Online at The Winslow Art Center
This is a new online workshop that I’ve developed in response to the many questions that I get about colour: How to make lively shadows and colourful greys? How to make a focal area pop without being garish? How to find the exact right colour to make another colour sing? There are many more. Colour is my obsession and how I use it brings a lot of questions. This workshop will answer them!
In “Make it Glow” I’ll show you how to use colour and value intelligently to be able to predictably create glow when you want it.
I’ll address luminous shadows, glow-enhancing paint application and brushwork, and the use of the transparency or opacity of pigments in creating glow.
Colour is mind blowing, so prepare yourself for a fun ride!
Online workshop facts:
My online classes are recorded and available for 60 days after the final class. Recordings are available within hours of the class, so there’s no worry if you’ve missed a lesson.
My camera and lights are good quality. You’ll see the lesson clearly.
Each class has a private chat site to upload homework and ask questions, and I give feedback on every piece of work.
I can talk and paint at the same time so the majority of class time is spent in demoing and describing exactly what I’m doing and why.
I love answering questions and my favourite class is one in which participants and I talk about paint while I demo.
You will learn A LOT! I’m amazed by the amount of material I cover in each 4- week workshop and student feedback always mentions how much they’ve learned.
I hope you’ll join me online in October!
Happy painting!
Two workshops in October
Hi,
Could the techniques in A Painted History be adapted to gouache? (I am new to painting and right now oils are not an option).
Thank you,
Jo
I watched your demo of facial features yesterday for the Winslow Art Center and really enjoyed it. I really love the way you use color and found it particularly useful to think in terms of "patches" of color. Like the commenter below, I'm wondering if I could use another medium--pastel, in my case--instead of oils in A Painted History? Thank you!
