I love teaching online! I’m surprised to be saying that because I used to think that online was the inferior compromise to in-person workshops: something that we all put up with because the pandemic gave us no choice. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that I could not only deliver a tonne (ton?) - whole lot of material from my home studio but also transmit it well enough to inspire excellent artwork from my course participants (who are comfortably working in their own studios). It’s a modern world:)
I’ll be back online teaching at The Winslow Art Center in January and I’m looking forward to it.
Because it’s an amazing workshop on so many levels, I’ll be teaching The Painted History: A Fresh Look at the Family Album once again.
This workshop covers both the technical aspects of painting: composition, colour, how to paint figures and faces… and the more profound aspect of making paintings: communication.
We work from pictures of our family and ancestors with the aim to depicting them on a deeper level than just physical; exploring how to make a painting that conveys both what we know of the subjects’ characters and what we want to express about them. I’ve seen such good paintings, along with an extraordinary level of class engagement, come out of this workshop. You’ll be challenged and stimulated, I guarantee it:)
The second workshop, Color and Shape: Elements for Dynamic Paintings, is a deep dive into the double primary palette, composition, brushwork, alla-prima methods, and more. I touch on palette and composition concepts in my other workshops, but this workshop goes in depth to give you a solid understanding of how to make a dynamic painting.
It’s a nuts and bolts workshop which will give you the tools to make thoughtfully-composed, richly-coloured paintings.
These workshops begin on January 9 and 10th and run for 4 weeks with an extra 1 1/2 hour recorded final critique on the 5th week. Classes are 3 hours/ week and are recorded. You have access to the recordings for 60 days after the final class.
Both workshops are suitable for all levels. I’m a logical teacher and you won’t feel at sea if you’re new to painting. More advanced artists will find challenges aplenty to help you raise your work to a new level of creativity and technical excellence.
I hope you’ll join me online!
PS, I’ve been honoured to receive compliments about my online teaching. Here are a few from my most recent workshops to let you know you’ll be in good hands:)
Ingrid, I am so impressed by your teaching on many levels. As a beginning painter, it was very intimidating to post paintings, but you critique in such a gentle and positive way that it was extremely helpful. Your ability to speak clearly while you are painting a demo is amazing! I find that most people stammer, or ramble and lose their train of thought, but you consistently stayed focused. It was quite informative to hear your thought processes as you painted. Thank you for packing so much information into the course and for improving my confidence!
Hi Ingrid, first of all, I wanted to say a huge thank you for an amazing class. I generally struggle with “taught” classes, it’s always been the case, no matter the subject. But this class was different. I think it is because you gave us specific homework and various techniques to approach it, so I could pick what worked for me. I love this class so much that I also signed up for your January class, can’t wait.
-Thank you for this wonderful workshop and for filling my mind with new ideas and excitement. With you…. Art and painting is never boring.
-Possibly the most important class I have ever taken! Thank you, Ingrid. I feel like I have been moving in this direction without any logic, so now I have a variety of logical tools to use.
Happy painting!
I am happy to do a video testimonial about your teaching any time. Your critiques are a thing of beauty in a world of barbs. And your demos are unique because you point out what you are doing while most teachers have no idea or can’t articulate why they make the choices they do. Loved Painted History.” Cynthia Hartwig
Hi Ingrid. The classes look amazing! Just wondering if there’s a deadline for signing up for the colour/shape class? Thanks :):)
