Two online workshops
I’ve got two online workshops coming up at The Winslow Art Center in May. Please scroll down for information about each of them.
Loosen Up Your Paintings
Online workshop at Winslow Art Center
Mondays, May 22 - June 12
I’m teaching this 4-week, online workshop again because it was such a success the first time. The participants loved it and so did I.
Looseness in painting is more than just flashy brushwork. In fact, some of the most hard-edged paintings can feel loose if the artist has adhered to a few key principles while designing and executing the piece. This workshop is about those principles.
The workshop delves into still life, landscape, and figurative genres - all with an eye to creating loose, confident work. The final assignment is to paint over an existing, tight work in any genre and to loosen it up boldly and with intention. The paintings that my students created were amazing. Previously-tight, unfocused paintings were transformed into vigorous, richly-colored artworks that conveyed what the artist wanted. Critiquing homework was a delight.

Expressive Florals:
Focus on Form, Color, and Brushwork
Online at The Winslow Art Center
Tuesdays, May 23 - June 13
After a long, snowy winter, I’m excited by the prospect of teaching florals for four weeks!
This workshop has two aims: to teach artists how to paint a variety of flower types and colors, and to use those flowers to convey a concept. Beauty for beauty’s sake is not nearly so interesting as beauty in the service of an idea.
I’ll challenge the participants to compose their flowers and supporting colors to evoke ideas and emotions in the viewer.
My aim is for the students in this workshop to create personal, contemporary works of art whose gorgeous colors and marks seduce the eye and engage the mind.

I hope you’ll join me for some exciting times at the easel.
Happy painting!
