The Painted History: Revisiting the Family Album ended last week and I’m a bit sad about that. It was an incredibly stimulating workshop for both the students and me as we interpreted our old photos with a contemporary twist. The participants went beyond simple “how to paint” territory (though there was plenty of “how to” in every demo) to create stunning, personal expressions that captured both the photos and the emotions that the photos brought up.
These faces were the final demo to show how scale determines level of detail. They were also the vehicle for an exploration of colour, temperature, edges, and brushwork. Every demo has to earn the space it takes up in my workshops!
Happily, I’ll be teaching The Painted History again beginning on May 21 and I can’t wait to see the new group’s fascinating photo references and the works that they inspire.
You can find out more about this online workshop here.
I hope you’ll join me for this unique painting experience as we look at not only how to paint, but also why we choose to paint the things we do.
Happy painting!
