L'Orto degli Angeli, Bevagna, Italy
Because it was so amazing the last time, I’m going back to Italy to teach a workshop with The Winslow Art Center team in October, 2023!
Really, I can’t say enough good things. The country, the views, the light: all of it is almost ridiculously beautiful. We spent the days in the 2022 workshop pointing: “look at that!”, gaping at the beauty, and working hard to do it justice in paint.
This year, we’ll be going to Bevagna, Umbria, a historic town with paintable views around every corner. Our well-appointed accommodations in L’Orto degli Angeli are perfect for both painting and relaxation. The boutique hotel includes a gorgeous walled garden and a large studio space - both of which we’ll make good use of.
We’ll paint en plein air in the garden and in the streets gathering colour and composition information from life. Then, we’ll use the studio to refine and revise our work as well as to create new works based on our field sketches.
The studio will also be a place to set up still life work and to experiment with colour and composition.
This will be an immersive, in-depth workshop focusing on colour, shape, brushwork and alla prima methods. Our subjects will be the picturesque streets, landscape, figures, and still life. Our final day will be a model painting session.
Each day will include group and individual instruction which focuses on developing a clear, logical approach to painting using a shape-based method and emphasizing colour and temperature. This method will allow you to tackle any subject from landscape to figures with confidence.
The workshop will challenge you (in a good way) whether you’re a beginner with some experience or an advanced artist. I’ll meet you at where you are on your painting journey and help you to move forward.
You can learn more about the workshop, excursions, accommodations and fees on the Winslow Art Center site. Martha Jordan, Winslow’s owner, has been taking groups of painters to Italy for years and can answer any travel questions that you have.
If you have questions about the workshop topics, please send me a note.
I hope you’ll join me for this adventure in painting and travel.
Happy painting!
