Online workshops in May
Summer is short in my part of the world, so I don’t teach during the summer weeks. Those are for gardening and uninterrupted painting - both occupations that I never get enough of. There is nothing so good as a tomato from my own garden or painting in the looong, sunny days of summer.
So I’m announcing my final two online workshops before the fall - both are figurative and are starting in May at The Winslow Art Center.
The Painted History: A Fresh Look at the Family Album
Mondays, May 13 - June 3
The Painted History: A Fresh Look at the Family Album has been a course that always has a long waitlist and I can understand why: no generic figure matters like the image of someone we know. There’s a deep and meaningful connection between the paintings produced in the class and their makers because the reference photos are personal ones of family and friends.
This workshop covers a lot of ground, from colour schemes and composition, to how to paint little faces - all with a clear concept in mind. I’ve seen inspired and thoughtful work come from this class in the past and am looking forward to seeing what the March group creates.

The Figure: Graceful and Loose
Tuesdays, May 14 - June 4
The Figure: Graceful and Loose delves into the specifics of painting the figure. In this class, our references are sometimes personal, but more often are found images sourced from the Internet. I’ll show you where to find lively figure references and how to use them without running into copyright issues.
Skin colours, gesture, brushwork and the integration of the figure into its environment are at the heart of the workshop. My aim is for artists to take risks with their colours and methods. I encourage bold brushwork and lively colour that interprets and transcends the photo reference.
Most of our subjects will be of bathing suit clad figures on beaches, but I’ll also address the clothed figure in the final class.
If loose, plausible and proportional figures are your goal, this one is for you.

Both workshops are filling fast because of existing waitlists so check them out soon if you’re interested.
I hope to see you online in the spring:)
Happy painting!
