One Subject Many Takes: Finding Originality Through a Series
Tuesdays, Nov. 16 - Dec. 7
Online: Winslow Art Center
10am - 1pm PST
**All lessons are recorded and available for 60 days after the final class**
I’m excited to announce a new workshop online at the Winslow Art Center!
“One Subject, Many Takes” shifts the focus from how to apply paint and use colour (though both will be included in my demoes and discussions) to the deeper reason that we paint. It’s a workshop meant to stimulate creativity and bring play into your work; to explore the exciting and liberating world of “what if”.
It will also encourage you to push into the realm of meaning in your work. Too often, we find ourselves simply reproducing our reference - whether that’s a still life, landscape or a photo - rather than going deeper and figuring out what we’d like to convey with that image. We’ll develop the concepts that underpin each painting, striving to edit extraneous detail and arrive at a distilled image, one that communicates with the viewer and evokes an idea or feeling in response.
Our series will be entirely based on a single image or a small series of photos that you’ve taken of one subject. You may also to choose to create the series from a small collection of still life objects. The subject really is up to you. A thoughtful painter can make meaningful work in any genre from floral to figurative so pick something that appeals to you and don’t second guess yourself too much about the worthiness of your choice.
Because I’m endlessly interested in my family’s old photos, I’ll choose one of these as my reference and use if for all of my demoes.
We’ll start several works at once, each using a different approach and develop them simultaneously. Some works will be small, quick, alla prima pieces while others will develop over the course of the 4 week workshop, layer by layer.
We’ll embrace the unknown, push out of old habits, and celebrate unexpected effects and surprises.
The series that you create will surprise you with its creativity and give you the courage to take more painting risks in the future.
I hope you’ll join me for a lot of fun!
