Portraiture: Playful and Unexpected
Online June 9 - 30
Winslow Art Center
When I started teaching online at The Winslow Art Center, way back at the start of the pandemic, portraiture was not a subject that filled classes. Landscapes, florals and still life all attracted registrants more easily. Happily, that has changed in a big way!
People want to paint people now and I’m delighted to be able to fill classes with artists who love what I love: the human face.
This new workshop will address both the how to’s of painting faces and the next step: making distinctive, stylistic choices in portraiture.
I’m frequently asked how and why I chose to accent a part of the face with unexpected colour or why I added obvious lines where I did. There are reasons for these choices and that’s what this workshop will focus on.
We’ll meld realistic portraiture with creative experimentation in mark making, colour, and composition. We’ll break out of our usual habits and push into the playful territory of what if: What if I add line, abstract shapes, or toning under the face? What if I put these things on top, or around the face? How do I pull the image together in a way that’s exciting and meaningful for me?
I envision a class with a lot of discussion and exploration and I know it will be fun!
As always, the class will be recorded and will be available for 60 days after the final lesson.
There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and get feedback both in class and on our private message board.

I hope you’ll join me!
Happy painting:)
