The eyes and mouth are the most expressive parts of the human face, and they can be the trickiest to paint. In life, they’re in constant motion: blinking, crinkling, twitching, speaking - all things that a painter has to convey in a medium that doesn’t budge once it’s applied to the canvas.
I’ll address this challenge on September 9th when I do an online demonstration for the Winslow Art Center’s Technique Takeaway series.
Called “The Indirect Approach to Features in Portraiture”, my demo will show my approach to painting eyes and mouths viewed from different angles. I’ll also show how to paint noses that do their job in the face: create the illusion of three dimensionality without drawing too much attention to themselves. What more can you ask of a nose?
I’ll integrate the features into the face while maintaining a relaxed, natural expression - on the portrait, not on me:) And, since we all end up with stiff, unsatisfactory portraits from time to time, I’ll provide strategies for loosening things back up once they’ve gone awry.
Your questions will be welcome! I can talk and paint at the same time so you’ll receive answers that make sense.
I hope you’ll join me for a fun demo of a most fascinating topic: the human face.
Happy painting!
