ONE SUBJECT, MANY TAKES:
Finding Originality Through a Series
June 23 - 25
Ellis Art Studios
Kelowna, BC
There are as many ways to make paintings as there are painters.
From lush, juicy paint, crisply applied
to dry, scumbled paint, layered and manipulated with scraping tools
or suggestive patches of colour, depicting the subject in very abstract ways, I enjoy pushing myself to explore the range of methods for capturing a subject.
I’m not a fan of formulaic approaches. Varying my techniques keeps me excited by painting. I love seeing something new and unexpected emerging on my canvas.
“One Subject, Many Takes” is about pushing yourself and exploring some unexpected possibilities in your own work. My aim is that you come out of the workshop with new ideas, processes, and enthusiasm for your painting practise.
We’ll work on several pieces during the 3-day workshop, all based on the same subject, or even the same image - one that you choose yourself.
Each painting will start with a different method, and each will have different goals. For example, one may explore the use of drawing in a painting, another, the use of alternative tools, while a third could be an exploration of brushwork or colour.
By working on several pieces in a short time, we’ll get over the preciousness of any single painting. Instead, we’ll create a body of work that shows great variety but is united by its subject.
I’ll work on both figurative and landscape demos throughout the workshop but I recommend that participants choose a single genre. Figures, landscapes, or still life are all possibilities.
If you’re eager to learn and paint with a group of like-minded artists, take in the vibrant lakeshore restaurants and activities in the evenings, and refresh yourself and your painting practise, I hope you’ll join me in sunny Kelowna in June!
This workshop is appropriate for painters working in oil and acrylic. My demos will be in oil.
