August 13
2:00 - 3:30pm PST
Winslow Art Center
Art stores are like candy shops. You can spend waaaayy too much time in them, trying to decide what you really need (candies are needs, aren’t they?) and you often leave with far more than is good for you. Or - in the case of art stores - for your painting.
I’ll be doing a demo for the Winslow Art Center’s “Technique Takeaway” series that focuses on the technical stuff that goes on around the making of a painting. My aim will be to simplify and clarify the many decisions that painters face before they even choose an image to paint.
The demo will be a show and tell experience. I’ll tell you about the characteristics of several mediums (oils, wax, gels and alkyds) and I’ll show you those mediums in action. You’ll clearly see how each medium impacts the look and properties of paint mixtures and application.
Since mediums are only a small part of the look of a painting, I’ll explore two other variables as well: brushes and surfaces.
You’ll see the difference between the marks made by synthetic and natural bristles of different shapes and lengths. As well, you’ll see how those marks are changed by the surface that they’re painted on. I’ll use traditional surfaces like linen, paper, panel and canvas as well as contemporary aluminum.
I love an interactive demo so you’ll be able to ask questions throughout my presentation.
The cost of the demo is $40 USD.
I hope to see you online to talk candy!
