I just finished teaching my online composition course at The Winslow Art Center and it was fantastic!
Unlike my usual workshops, this one was less about painting and more about considering and discussing. We got into intense conversations about line, angle, shape, colour and value and there were many revelations for all of us as we analyzed how compositions worked or didn’t quite work. Figuring out how to improve the compositions as a group expanded our thinking beyond what we could imagine as individuals.
For the first time, I used collage as the major planning method and was blown away by the medium. It forces decisiveness in all ways as it’s impossible to fudge an area with a bit of abstract mark making when each area is a single-coloured, hard-edged piece of paper. All of the collages that they produced looked frame worthy. It’s a medium that I’m going to explore in my own practise going forward.
Here are several of the many gorgeous collage compositions created by the artists in my class. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!
Happy scissoring!😊
And a digital collage:
This looks wonderful!
Very interesting approach. Simplification is something I sometimes struggle with even when I know keep it abstract dummy. Thanks!!
