It was rough, but we made it through our week of painting, eating, drinking, and being pampered at Castello di Petroia in Umbria. Somebody’s got to do it:)
I taught 15 amazing painters and all-around lovely human beings for 5 days in this picturesque setting for the Winslow Art Center. We tackled still life, landscape, and figure with a focus on shape, colour, and temperature, and, at the end of each painting day, we met for aperativo and sumptuous suppers. Our nightly, animated conversations rang through the castle, so it was a good thing that the walls are 3 feet thick and there are no nearby neighbours!
Our group took up the whole castle and the owners of the Winslow - Martha Jordan, her husband, and her daughter - worked tirelessly with the castle staff to support us and fulfill our needs. Did we need the breakfast room cleared for painting because of rain? No problem! Massive oak tables and chairs were moved and lights materialized. A model to sit all day in the sun? Sure! Coffee and cakes for a 3 pm break? We had only to ask for it to happen.
Beyond the needs of the workshop, we had opportunities to get a taste of Italy, as well: a truffle hunting excursion; an expert to give us a tour of the night sky by telescope; a day trip to a nearby, historic town for shopping and sightseeing; hiking - it was all on offer.
It was a wonderful week and I’m not exaggerating when I say it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.
I’ll be going back to Italy next year with the Winslow to an exciting, new location and, though I’ve only just unpacked from this trip, I’m already looking forward to it. I’ll post the details when they’re finalized.
In the meantime, if the painting adventure of a lifetime calls to you, you can contact the Winslow Art Center and put your name on the list for first notification.
Felice piturando!
