I’ll be teaching two floral workshops online at The Winslow Art Center starting in January 2022. Flowers on the easel lets me pretend that there’s no snow outside!
These workshops are repeats that proved popular the first time I taught them and the works that my students posted in our class feed was outstanding. That’s the clearest indicator of successful instruction in my books.
Both workshops are recorded so you don’t have to worry if you miss a day. The recordings are available for 60 days after the final class.
We also have a private, class feed for posting homework and asking questions which means you’ll have the opportunity for plenty of feedback throughout the 4 weeks of classes.
Florals: Direct and Indirect
Tuesdays, Jan. 18 - Feb. 8
This workshop explores how to paint individual flower forms using an alla prima, layered approach. As well, we work on a more complex, wet-over-dry painting, adding layers with each class. I cover colour, form, brushwork, and more. My goal is that the participants feel able to tackle any flower form in a logical, simplified manner - capturing its essence and condensing all the fussy little petals into a few well-judged marks.

Composing with Flowers
Saturdays, Jan. 22 - Feb. 12
In this workshop we’ll put flowers together and relate them to the entire picture plane. Too often, painters get so excited about the flowers they’re painting that they spend all of their energy on them and then wonder what to do with “the background”. During this 4-week class, we’ll stop seeing the canvas in terms of subject and background and instead see how every part of the canvas is equally important - how changing any element affects the entire composition.
You’ll become highly sensitive to shapes, colours, angles, values, texture, brushwork… I could go on:)
My goal is to help painters make interesting, thoughtful paintings that go beyond the subject and tackle the framework of the painting in an abstract way.

I hope you’ll join me in the new year for some thought-provoking and fun painting!
